The Palace Museum is not a courtyard you casually add after breakfast. Passport details, a controlled entrance, security and a northward sequence make the reservation the structural beam of the day.

UNESCO describes the Central Axis as a north-south ensemble of palaces, gardens, ceremonial buildings and public space. The Forbidden City is its central imperial component, not the entire story.
A northbound continuation
- Inside: read successive gates and courts as controlled ceremonial depth.
- North exit: confirm the actual exit and retrieve your orientation before arranging transport.
- Jingshan option: use the hill to see the palace in the wider city plan when weather and energy cooperate.
- Separate south: Tian'anmen, Qianmen and Temple of Heaven deserve their own rules and time.
Use four attention blocks
Opening arrangements change. Keep the sequence conceptual and obey the time on the confirmed ticket.
Arrive with margin
Allow for transport, perimeter checks and finding the instructed entrance. Eat, use facilities and organize documents before the queue.
Main ceremonial line
Give the outer courts full attention while visual scale is still fresh, taking short pauses away from the central crowd.
One side collection
Choose by interest and current access. A deliberate detour is better than a race through every open gallery.

Continue to Jingshan only with enough daylight and energy; otherwise end with a proper meal and move the viewpoint to another day.

Can I add Tian'anmen Square automatically?

What is the best next stop?
Jingshan is the most coherent geographic continuation, but only when energy and current park access support it. Beihai is better saved for a slower separate block.
