Halkidiki: Kassandra or Sithonia
Halkidiki’s branching peninsulas make “a beach day” a destination choice, not a short city transfer. Choose Kassandra for a developed resort corridor or Sithonia for a more dispersed coast, then pick a town whose local bus or parking actually reaches the beach you want.
Select one peninsula, overnight base and shoreline rather than trying to sample both arms from Thessaloniki in a single day.
Stay near the first door; solve the last mile.
Spend at least one night on the peninsula if beach time is the point. Kassandra towns offer a different service pattern from Sithonia’s dispersed coves; compare the hotel’s walk, bus stop and evening services before booking.
Start from KTEL Chalkidikis’ hub at the 9th km of the Thessaloniki–N. Moudania road. Search its official live route/date listings for the chosen Kassandra, Sithonia or Athos destination, then confirm the final beach link. A rental car makes multiple coves possible but adds parking and peak-season congestion; do not assume a beach stop has a convenient return bus.
Cove access may mean steep paths, sand, steps or exposed parking areas. Check the beach and accommodation entrance itself; regional bus access does not guarantee accessible shoreline entry.
Make the main commitment and the return fit together.
Pick one arm and one coastal base. If you want to change peninsulas, treat that as a transfer rather than an afternoon detour and protect the return to the city or airport.
Two or more nights turn a long road journey into useful beach time. A same-day visit from Thessaloniki should target one served town, not several coves.
Verify the service and the place you will enter.
Check KTEL Chalkidiki’s live timetable, terminal, luggage and seasonal service. Reserve a car early if it is essential and verify parking with the accommodation; no fixed summer frequency is assumed here.
Keep a complete alternative close to the same base.
Peak summer brings traffic, stronger sun and fuller accommodation. Shoulder seasons can reduce beach services; check HNMS marine/weather conditions and local operator notices before committing to a boat or remote cove.
If the bus timing or sea/weather conditions do not work, use one accessible waterfront near your base or return to Thessaloniki earlier. Do not start a second peninsula crossing late in the day.
One peninsula and a slow swim day beat a high-mileage coast tour. Choose service access over the most distant photograph if traveling without a car.
