Semporna permit first, reef second, photograph last.
The spectacular lagoon is a protected operating environment, not an automatic island-hopping product. Choose a licensed operator, confirm Sabah Parks procedures, match hiking or water activity to real ability and protect the return before boarding.
CHECKED
BEFORE SEA
A beautiful route still needs a lawful operating chain.
Sabah Parks manages Tun Sakaran Marine Park. Confirm the current park conservation procedure, any activity-specific approval and the operator's license rather than accepting a vague claim that “everything is included.”
All three must say go.
Park procedure
Ask who obtains permission, where fees are paid, which islands or activities are approved and what receipt or manifest you receive.
Licensed operator
Verify the business, named jetty, vessel, guide or dive professional, passenger limit, flotation and emergency process.
Current conditions
Compare the official marine forecast with Sabah Parks and operator advice. A prepaid day is never stronger than a storm call.
Choose the purpose before drawing the route.
Sabah Parks lists Bodgaya, Bohey Dulang, Tetagan, Selakan, Sebangkat, Maiga, Sibuan and Mantabuan inside Tun Sakaran. Not every island has the same access, facility or authorized activity.
One park, several activity zones.
Let current permission, group ability and sea state determine the actual stops. Do not turn named islands into a fixed promise.

Name every handoff before leaving the jetty.
Sabah Parks identifies a Semporna mainland tourist-jetty connection for the park, while tourism guidance also notes several local jetties. Use the exact operator instructions for your trip; similar-sounding pickup points are not interchangeable.
Skill and restraint travel together.
Tun Sakaran protects coral reef, seagrass, island forest and community-linked waters. Park payment does not purchase the right to touch, crowd or extract.
Keep fins and feet clear
Use correctly fitted flotation and buoyancy. Never stand on coral, kick the reef or rest equipment on living substrate.
Wildlife chooses the gap
Do not chase, feed, touch or surround turtles and reef animals. A guide should end an encounter before the animal is pressured.
Match the site honestly
Tell the operator your swimming, snorkeling or diving experience and health. Certification does not override current or fatigue.
Take waste back
Refill water where safe, secure loose plastic, use reef-conscious habits and leave shells, sand and animals in place.

A shore day makes the marine days safer.
Use arrival to verify the operator, fit equipment, buy only needed supplies and understand the town's working maritime context. Avoid photographing residents—especially children—as anonymous scenery.
Ask permission, do not offer sweets or money for staged portraits, and use community visits only when local hosts clearly control the exchange and benefit.
Two sea windows, one reserve, no trophy circuit.
Keep the two activity days exchangeable. If the sea or park closes, use the shore or rest day rather than pressuring an operator to improvise outside safe conditions.
Arrive + audit the chain
Settle in Semporna, verify the licensed operator, named jetty, park process and equipment. Protect sleep before the boat.
One park argument
Choose a Bohey Dulang trail-and-lagoon day or a guided reef-focused day according to permission, footwear, skill and weather.
Second water window
Dive or snorkel only at suitable sites, or use the day as weather reserve. Repetition is more valuable than extra island names.
Return protected
Keep the morning conservative, confirm the road transfer and avoid placing a small-boat return against an immediate flight.
Semporna and Tun Sakaran FAQ
Do I need permission to visit the park?
Sabah Parks applies conservation and activity procedures. Confirm the current permit, fee and reporting process through Sabah Parks and the licensed operator before departure.
Can I hike Bohey Dulang and snorkel the same day?
Some operators build multi-stop routes, but hiking access, covered footwear, approval, sea conditions and group ability determine what is safe. Choose by purpose rather than maximizing stops.
Is Semporna only for certified divers?
No. Properly supervised snorkeling, a permitted nature trail or shore context can form a strong visit. Divers should match sites to certification, health and conditions.
Can I book a boat after arriving?
Possibly, but do not trade away license verification and park procedure for a cheap last-minute offer. Popular dates and controlled activities can require advance coordination.
What happens if the weather is poor?
The park or operator may change or cancel the route. Review cancellation terms before paying and keep a shore or rest day available.
Can I stay inside Tun Sakaran Marine Park?
Sabah Parks' official facilities page says ordinary visitor accommodation on park islands is very limited. Verify the current authorized option directly and never assume an online “island stay” is inside the park or licensed.
