Bern rewards depth over speed: let the Aare bend define the old city, then decide whether the second day belongs to museums, a hill or the countryside.
Bern’s UNESCO-listed old city is unusually coherent, so a checklist works worse than a directional walk. Use the station-to-bear-park axis once, then branch to the Aare, museums or Gurten. Emmental belongs on a separate day because rural transport and opening patterns are slower than the capital’s tram grid.
Two nights are enough for the capital; add a third if Emmental or a long museum day matters. The station and western old town are the easiest bases for luggage and day trips.
Bern station feeds trams, buses and national rail. The old city is walkable, but local transit is useful for the return from the bear park, Gurten or museums south of the river. Emmental trips need a specific rail/bus plan.
Bern’s center is year-round. The Aare is beautiful but water safety and temperature matter; countryside excursions gain daylight and greener landscapes in warmer months.

This gives the capital’s strongest urban story with almost no ticket dependence. It sacrifices interior museum time, so it suits a first day when architecture, public space and the river matter more than collections.
