Montreux, Vevey & the Riviera
The Riviera is a line, not a center: choose castle, lakeshore or mountain railway and use the train to stop the shoreline from becoming one long walk.
Montreux and Vevey share a dramatic lake-and-mountain setting but serve different days. Chillon is a fixed historical anchor, Rochers-de-Naye is a weather-sensitive mountain excursion, and Vevey adds a smaller urban scale. The regional train network means you never need to walk the entire Riviera to prove you saw it.
Two nights work well; three make room for a weather-flexible mountain day. Montreux is best for Chillon and mountain rail; Vevey is calmer for cafés and lakeside evenings.
Mainline trains link Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux. Local buses and regional trains reach Chillon; the Rochers-de-Naye railway departs from Montreux. Check the exact mountain timetable before committing.
The lakeshore is useful year-round, while high mountain access depends on weather and operating season. Festival periods can strongly affect accommodation and crowd levels.

Montreux Waterfront & Chillon Castle
The castle gives strong historical depth; the promenade gives scenery and town context. Doing both one-way is usually more satisfying than a long out-and-back that reduces time inside Chillon.

The ride delivers a dramatic elevation change without a complicated transfer chain. It is poor value in dense cloud if your main purpose is the panorama, so a flexible schedule matters more than advance itinerary pride.

Vevey gives a smaller-scale urban day and relaxed lakefront. It has fewer headline landmarks than Montreux/Chillon, which is precisely why it works well after several high-intensity Swiss destinations.
