Portland pairs a compact working waterfront with island ferries and a regional food scene. The Old Port is not the same outing as a distant lighthouse circuit, and ferry choice determines whether you are visiting an island or simply enjoying the crossing.

Acadia offers rocky shore, carriage roads and mountain viewpoints, but the park and Bar Harbor can be busy in different ways. Choose a walking or scenic-driving priority and check which roads, shuttles and reservations apply to it.

Northern New England is a road journey with slow scenic sections and rapidly changing mountain weather. A valley village, a short trail and a mountain-road viewpoint may fit one day; crossing several states while hiking usually does not.

Three visits, three different days
Portland, Maine & Casco Bay
Two days for the city and one bay outing.
Check seasonal ferry frequencies and island services. Working wharves can be restricted, and weather offshore may be colder than in town. Restaurant bookings and dietary needs deserve advance attention during busy weekends.
Acadia & Mount Desert Island
Two or three days based on Mount Desert Island.
Vehicle reservations, entrance passes and trail conditions are separate checks. Stay back from wave-washed rocks. Fall and winter can reduce facilities, and a clear morning does not guarantee a safe exposed summit later.
White Mountains & Vermont Roads
Three to five days for one mountain-and-village circuit.
Check road closures, trail conditions and daylight. Autumn traffic can be substantial, and foliage timing varies by elevation and weather. Respect farm entrances and private land when stopping for photographs; roadside shoulders are not automatic parking.
