Portland & the Columbia Gorge
Cannon Beach & the Oregon Coast
The coast is a separate weather system from Portland. Cannon Beach offers a walkable base and striking sea stacks, while a longer coastal drive needs overnight stops and enough time to enjoy the shoreline.
Plan your visit ↓
A full day from Portland; an overnight stay allows a calmer coastal rhythm.
Use three or four days with a city base and a separate road day.
A practical visit plan
Walk the beach from a legal access point and use tide information to decide how close to intertidal areas to go. Add one open headland viewpoint or town stop. Return inland early if visiting for the day, rather than extending the drive into darkness.
What to check before leaving
Sneaker waves, drift logs and cold water are serious hazards. Keep distance from the surf and respect wildlife closures around Haystack Rock. Tide-pool access does not permit collecting or disturbing animals.

Columbia River Gorge
The Gorge is a landscape of waterfalls, cliffs and a working transport corridor. Popular stops need parking or shuttle planning, and a short viewpoint visit is different from a steep trail or a cross-river road circuit.
