Northeast
Washington, DC
Washington is a city of substantial institutions, long open spaces and neighborhoods beyond the National Mall. A museum day, a memorial walk and a Georgetown outing work better as separate plans than as one exhaustive circuit.
Plan your visit ↓
Allow three to five days, with a Metro-connected base and limited daily museum commitments.
Start with one focused visit, then add another when the journey and opening hours fit.
Explore Washington, DC

National Mall & Memorials
The Mall looks compact on a map but its memorials are separated by long walks in exposed conditions. Treat commemorative sites as places for reflection and plan water, shade and a transport exit before walking from end to end.

Smithsonian Museums & Capitol Hill
The Smithsonian is a group of institutions with different locations and entry arrangements. Pick a subject and a specific museum before planning the day; a free admission policy does not mean all popular entries are available without a reservation.

Georgetown & the Potomac
Georgetown offers historic streets, shops and a riverfront setting beyond the monumental core. Hills and the lack of a Metro station in the center make the last part of the journey worth planning, particularly for visitors with limited mobility.

Three visits, three different days
National Mall & Memorials
Half a day for one section; avoid combining every memorial with a full museum.
Summer humidity, thunderstorms and winter wind change the experience. Follow closures and ceremonial arrangements. Restrooms and drinking water are not at every stop, and the nearest visible building may not be a public shelter.
Smithsonian Museums & Capitol Hill
A full day for one major museum and one modest addition.
Check timed-entry requirements directly with each institution. Do not confuse the National Mall Air and Space Museum with the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles. A Capitol tour is a separate reservation and should not be squeezed between distant museums.
Georgetown & the Potomac
Half a day, or longer with a meal and a selected towpath section.
Check path works and river conditions before extending the walk. Canal scenery is not a guarantee of a continuous accessible route. Keep shopping, restaurant queues and a longer river excursion as optional choices rather than booking them all together.
