CAVES / RIVERS / FOREST · reviewed 31 August 2026

Phong Nha–Ke Bang Start with an accessible river cave, then earn the expedition layers.

Phong Nha–Ke Bang is a cave and forest system rather than a single attraction. The Son River and Phong Nha Cave, Paradise and Tien Son, Chay River–Dark Cave, Nuoc Mooc, Hang En and Son Doong range from managed day visits to tightly controlled multi-day expeditions. The 2025 UNESCO transboundary extension makes conservation and carrying capacity central to every page.

Six chapters, six different conditions.

Distance, weather, sacred space, working neighborhoods and protected landscapes cannot share one generic checklist.

01 / ribbon

Son River and Phong Nha Cave

Reach the official tourism center or pier with current ticket and boat information. Water level and weather can affect departures.

Keep the boundaryDo not stand in boats, touch formations or use flash where prohibited. The cave is a protected environment and the river is an active transport route.
02 / section

Paradise and Tien Son Caves

Use the official tourism center or park approach and confirm the current shuttle, stairs and ticket combination. Heat outside can make the climb more demanding than the cave suggests.

Keep the boundaryStay on boardwalks, do not touch formations or carve surfaces, and follow lighting and photography rules.
03 / signal

Chay River and Dark Cave

Use the official tourism center or authorized operator entrance with the required briefing and equipment. Leave valuables and non-waterproof electronics behind.

Keep the boundaryNo independent swimming, diving, rock climbing or gear changes. Keep the river and cave free from sunscreen waste, plastic and noise.
04 / field

Nuoc Mooc Forest Springs

Travel by road from Phong Nha and confirm the current entrance, parking, lockers and water-area status. Rain can change the stream and close activities.

Keep the boundaryNo soap, litter, fishing, plant collection or swimming outside designated areas. Keep voices low and do not climb wet banks.
05 / expedition

Hang En Expedition

Arrive in Phong Nha before the operator’s required briefing and pickup window. Equipment, releases and medical information are part of participation.

Keep the boundaryNo solo departure, cave alteration, litter, loud behavior or unauthorized photography of residents. The core zone is not a public shortcut.
06 / expedition

Son Doong Expedition

Reach Dong Hoi or Phong Nha according to the operator’s required schedule, attend the mandatory briefing and bring only approved equipment.

Keep the boundaryNo independent entry, unauthorized route, collecting, touching formations, drone, litter or photography that compromises people, wildlife or safety.
