Plan Adelaide Hills around one ridge objective: Hahndorf by a verified regional return, or Cleland and Mount Lofty with a booked driver. The bus stop, closing time, fire status and sober return decide which version works.
Use this when the date-specific journey planner gives you a dependable return. Keep the visit within the town centre and choose one venue whose hours you have checked. Do not add Cleland on the same bus assumption.
Use the park’s exact “Stop 27 – Cleland Wildlife Park” destination and check the opening page, last entry and closure notices. This is a clear wildlife-park outing; Hahndorf needs its own onward ride.
Book the vehicle and sober driver before tasting. Choose Cleland plus one short town visit, or Hahndorf plus a summit view. A second distant stop is optional only after the pickup and daylight return are fixed.
Choose a served town or a ridge-and-wildlife day.
There are two useful itineraries here, and they do not connect themselves. A no-car visitor can make Hahndorf the whole purpose: confirm the Adelaide Metro journey planner shows an outbound and return for the exact date, then spend the day on the town’s public main street and one venue that is actually open. Do not infer that a regional Hills service also reaches Cleland or Mount Lofty. The official Hills transport list covers several operator routes and regional corridors; a named district is not a promise of a frequent visitor shuttle. For Cleland, the park gives a precise public-transport destination, “Stop 27 – Cleland Wildlife Park.” That gets you to Cleland, not automatically to Hahndorf afterwards.

Choose the operating plan
Settle the exact date, weekday or weekend service and return first. For a no-car day, make Hahndorf the destination; for Cleland, enter “Stop 27 – Cleland Wildlife Park” in Adelaide Metro. A driver or tour opens a different route, but it must have a named pickup and sober return.
Spend the main block
In Hahndorf, use the walkable public town centre and one confirmed venue. At Cleland, check hours and last entry, then choose one park section from the current map. Do not stack three long visits merely because they share a regional label.
Add one ridge view only
Mount Lofty Summit is an exposed weather stop. Add it only when the cloud, wind, road and driver plan leave enough time to descend; otherwise keep Cleland or the town as the complete day.
Return before the road darkens
Reach the confirmed stop, pickup or Adelaide accommodation with margin. Fog, wildlife, fatigue and fire instructions can change the return; cancel the optional stop before you cut into the safety margin.

Three reasons to change the plan.
A regional route is not a sightseeing shuttle
Hills buses serve named corridors and operators, not every park, winery or village-to-village connection. Check both legs for the exact date; if the return fails the test, choose another plan before setting out.
Fire, heat and visibility
Read SA Country Fire Service warnings and the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for the actual district. Extreme fire danger, a park closure, poor visibility or a hot exposed summit can remove the outdoor anchor. Follow the managing authority’s closure, even if a road remains open.
Alcohol and last-mile driving
A tasting changes the driver contract. Select a sober driver or licensed tour before leaving Adelaide, and confirm how the group gets back from the final stop. Never turn a missed bus or late tasting into an improvised drive.
Access is never implied by proximity.
The Adelaide Hills are on Peramangk Country. Hahndorf is a living town with residents, workers and privately owned farms. Stay on public streets and marked visitor access, follow each business’s photography and entry rules, and do not treat a cellar door, orchard or driveway as public space. Use local Peramangk-led interpretation where available, and do not assume a scenic viewpoint implies permission to enter cultural or private land.

Can I visit Hahndorf and Cleland by public bus in one day?
Do not assume a through connection. Cleland publishes Stop 27 as its public-transport destination, while Hahndorf needs its own date-specific outbound and return. Put each leg into Adelaide Metro before booking; if the transfer and last return do not work, choose one place or reserve a licensed tour.
Is Hahndorf a reliable no-car day trip?
It can be when the current regional journey planner shows a usable service in both directions for your exact date. Confirm the named town stop and final return, then keep the visit in the public town centre. A bus corridor does not provide a guaranteed ride to wineries or farms.
What changes the Cleland plan?
Opening hours, last entry, catastrophic fire danger and extreme weather can affect access. Check the park’s official visit page and current notices before leaving Adelaide; use a city museum day if the park closes or conditions make outdoor walking unsuitable.
Can I include a tasting?
Only after the return vehicle and sober driver are settled. With public transport, stay in the town and do not assume the bus serves each producer. With a tour, confirm it accepts the venue and wait time before departing.
