Shichahai walk by the city's old time
The Bell and Drum Towers once marked civic rhythm at the north end of the Central Axis. Below them, Wanning Bridge, lake edges and lived-in lanes carry different clocks. Walk slowly enough to tell public heritage from someone's front door.

Check the separate opening and ticket status of both towers. Use the height to orient the grey-roofed old city rather than only seeking a skyline.
Cross Wanning
The bridge ties the Grand Canal history and Central Axis together. Pause without blocking the narrow movement around it.
Leave the headline street
Choose a short public-lane loop, keep voices low and treat closed doors, signs and daily routines as boundaries.
Let the lake slow down
Walk one shore, sit or use a currently operating boat only if it improves the route instead of consuming the afternoon.
Read Bell and Drum as a pair
The towers stood at the north end of the historic axis and regulated urban time. Their roles, internal exhibitions and access are different, so a joint ticket does not make them interchangeable.

- Opening: verify each tower's current day, last entry and holiday schedule.
- Ticket: use the current official booking channel and confirm whether a joint option is offered.
- Stairs: expect steep historic circulation and assess mobility needs before purchase.

Use a resident-first walking code
Hutongs include heritage, businesses, schools, deliveries and homes. The most responsible route is often shorter, quieter and less intrusive than the one a viral video suggests.
Keep thresholds clear
Do not stand in private entrances, lean on gates or peer into courtyards that are not explicitly open to visitors.
Ask before close work
A public street does not erase personal dignity. Obtain consent before photographing residents, vendors or children closely.
Make room for daily life
Move aside for bicycles, mobility devices, deliveries and local traffic; narrow lanes are working circulation.

Are both towers open every day?
No schedule should be assumed. Beijing's July 2026 update listed days and ticket channels; confirm both towers immediately before visiting.
Is Shichahai best by day or night?
Daylight makes the urban and water structure easier to read; evening changes the commercial atmosphere. Choose one purpose rather than waiting all day for both.
Can I enter any courtyard?
No. Enter only museums, businesses or homes explicitly open to visitors. A photogenic door is not an invitation.
How does this pair with Jingshan?
They connect geographically, but combining Jingshan, Beihai, towers and hutongs can become an oversized walking day. Choose two main anchors.
