Hefang Street & Southern Song look behind the souvenir frontage
Hefang is easy to dismiss because its busiest blocks are commercial. The better visit distinguishes inherited businesses from themed retail, uses one interior for depth and reconnects the street to the former Southern Song capital below Wu Hill.
Read the street by function, not just façade
Architecture, medicine, food and imperial-city memory occupy different depths. Give each a different amount of time.
Begin with the roofline
Walk one block before entering anywhere. Notice lane width, upper floors, shop signs and the direction of Wu Hill.
Enter one historic business
A pharmacy museum or established craft institution can reveal working knowledge behind the heritage image. Verify entry and current exhibition access.
Choose a dish, not a checklist
Research one Hangzhou specialty and one backup. Queue length and a famous sign do not guarantee the meal suits your budget or diet.
Find the Southern Song layer
Use Imperial Street or Wu Hill to place commerce within the former capital rather than treating Hefang as an isolated replica street.

Arrive while façades, deliveries and side lanes are still visible. Save the exact end of the street where you intend to begin.

A short hill or Imperial Street extension changes the scale from shopping lane to city topography. Do not add both if heat or mobility limits are tight.

Eat or revisit the main spine after lights appear, then leave before the crowd makes every side street feel interchangeable.

Look for dated displays, documented business history, named craft processes and interpreters. Decorative antiquity alone is not historical context.
