Positano depth
Use one landing or bus stop and accept the town’s vertical streets. It gives iconic coast scale but sacrifices Ravello and a long Amalfi interior.
Amalfi and Ravello
Use Amalfi as the transport hinge and one confirmed uphill connection to Ravello. This gives cathedral and terrace contrast but not a relaxed Positano visit.
Marine coast line
Use a verified ferry to understand the cliffs from the water, stopping in at most one principal town. It gives the best geographic view but is weather-dependent.
Begin where the transport actually ends.
SITA buses, Travelmar ferries and private road products use different terminals, ticket rules and capacity. Positano’s landing and upper bus stops are separated by stairs; Ravello requires an uphill road connection from Amalfi. Match the mode to the chosen town and walking ability.
Know what the chosen line leaves out.
Three famous towns are not three adjacent platforms. Choosing one town or one pair gives up another postcard but creates time for the stairs, cathedral, gardens and an unhurried return.

Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Capri sit close on a map but operate through different rail, bus, road and marine systems. A credible plan chooses Sorrento, Salerno or a coast village as the base, names the port or bus stop and keeps one complete land-side alternative for rough sea or road disruption.
BASE
Three to five nights gives room for one peninsula day, one coast route and one island window without making every evening a transfer. Sorrento works well for Naples rail and Capri boats; Salerno is strong for the eastern coast; a village stay reduces sightseeing transfers but complicates luggage and departure-day reliability.
TRANSFER
EAV rail reaches Sorrento, mainline rail reaches Salerno, coast buses use named stops and ferries use specific ports with seasonal schedules. Marina Piccola, Sorrento’s centre and the rail station have a real height gap. Build every route from the final return backward.
SEASON
Marine service, heat, cliff paths and road congestion are strongly seasonal. Summer adds frequency but also full vessels, queues and road pressure; winter can remove routes entirely. Sea state and fire or path controls can override a sunny forecast.
LOWER-RISK DAY
Keep a complete land day in the base: Sorrento’s historic centre, Salerno and its collections, or one coast town reached by the most reliable current road service. A cancelled boat is not permission to improvise a multi-town taxi chase.
