Catalonia & Barcelona
Barcelona rewards a neighbourhood-led stay; Girona and the coast are separate rail and last-mile decisions. AVE access from France or Madrid lands on a city network, while beach, hillside and monument visits still have their own doors and local services.
Choose a Barcelona neighbourhood by the first timed entrance and evening return. Use regional rail for a deliberate Girona or coast trip only after checking the departure station, route and last-mile link; one rail map does not make every Costa Brava town a station town.

Late spring and early autumn suit long walks, though popular dates still need early reservations. Summer combines heat, beach demand and city crowds: protect water and shade breaks, use the beach early or late, and check AEMET for heat or storm warnings. Winter is milder than inland Spain but brings shorter daylight and variable coastal weather.
Barcelona Sants serves high-speed services and major regional connections; the airport Metro is a separate L9 Sud line to T1/T2 and requires the correct airport fare product. Do not confuse Barcelona Sants with the city-centre Metro station closest to your lodging. Girona is a rail hub for its old town, but the Costa Brava is a spread-out coast where bus, local taxi, rental car or a different rail endpoint may be needed.
Eixample or Sant Antoni gives a legible grid and Metro access; the Gothic Quarter and El Born reduce walks to the old centre but add narrow lanes, crowds and nightlife noise. Sants is practical for an early train. For a multi-night stay, prioritize one neighbourhood and validate the route to the exact station or timed venue.
Avoid a rental car for central Barcelona. Use regional rail and bus for selected coast trips after checking transfer frequency and return; rent only if the itinerary deliberately links rural coves, villages or inland stops and you can park outside restricted streets.
Each route has a different centre of gravity.
Compare the arrival, main commitment and effort. A compact city walk, timed interior and rural extension are not interchangeable day plans.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the airport Metro with any Barcelona transit ticket?
No. TMB publishes a separate airport ticket and fare conditions for the L9 Sud airport stations. Check the current product and any pass exclusions before boarding.
Is Barcelona Sants the same as the city-centre rail station?
No. Sants is a large interchange southwest of the historic centre. Check the exact station and allow time between your hotel, train platform and any airport Metro connection.
Do I need a car on the Costa Brava?
Not always. Girona plus regional bus can work for some towns, but the coast is dispersed and services vary. Choose a specific town and verify its onward and return transport before deciding.
