The M2 metro links Ouchy, the station area and upper Lausanne. Start high or low and move in one direction; using the metro for one major elevation change is more efficient than proving the city is walkable.

The route reveals Lausanne’s geography better than a flat attraction list. It sacrifices long museum time, so choose the cathedral/old city, Ouchy and one cultural stop rather than filling every level.

Lausanne stacks its station, old city and Ouchy lakefront on different elevations, while Lavaux stretches east along rail lines and vineyard terraces. Use metro and trains to control vertical movement, then choose one vineyard segment rather than chasing every named village.

Base strategy

Two nights are enough for Lausanne and a Lavaux half day; three allow museums and a slower lakeshore. The station is the practical middle level between the old city and Ouchy.

Transfer system

Lausanne Metro solves the city’s elevation changes. Regional trains are the backbone of Lavaux; walking between villages is optional and should follow signed paths, weather and your return station.

Season gate

Lavaux is most pleasant when paths are dry and daylight is generous, but working vineyards demand respect year-round. Lausanne itself remains strong in rain through museums and metro-linked districts.

Regional fallback

If vineyard walking is poor, ride the rail corridor, choose one village and return to Lausanne for the Olympic Museum or old city. Do not force exposed terrace paths in heat, storms or slippery conditions.

Fallback

A useful day even when the postcard disappears.

Rain strengthens the metro-led plan: keep short old-city segments, add a museum and remove the long waterfront walk. Ouchy remains useful as a quick geographic endpoint even in poor weather.
