Zermatt’s car-free village concentrates rail, mountain transport and Matterhorn viewpoints into a small valley head. The challenge is not access to options but choosing one elevation system per day. Use village time as the buffer around mountain weather, not as a fourth attraction squeezed between summit tickets.
Three nights give a reasonable chance of one clear mountain day; four add useful resilience. Staying near Zermatt station simplifies luggage, while village-center hotels reduce evening walking.
Mainline travelers change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for Zermatt; private cars stop outside the village. Gornergrat, Sunnegga and glacier-bound lifts use different stations and ticket systems inside Zermatt.
Mountain rail and lifts operate on seasonal schedules with maintenance. Snow, wind and cloud affect high terrain even when the village is comfortable.

Zermatt Village & Gornergrat
Gornergrat gives one of the clearest high-level Matterhorn panoramas with straightforward rail access. It costs a large part of the day and budget, so it is less compelling in dense cloud than lower village or hiking options.

Sunnegga gives fast elevation and strong Matterhorn angles with more walking flexibility than a pure summit railway. The full lake circuit costs time and legs; a short viewpoint visit can be better for families or unstable weather.

The excursion provides high-alpine and glacier context unavailable from the village. It is more exposed to wind, altitude and cloud than lower viewpoints, and it should not be chosen merely because it is the highest ticket.
