Sunnegga & Five Lakes
Use the Sunnegga side for a lighter high-altitude day, choosing a short viewpoint circuit or the Five Lakes route only after checking trail condition, heat and cloud.

Sunnegga viewpoint
Minimal walking and quick panorama access.
Partial lake walk
Choose one or two lakes with an easy return plan.
Full Five Lakes route
Only when trail, fitness and final transport all support the longer circuit.
Know where the day actually begins.
Underground funicular access begins in Zermatt and connects onward to higher lifts. The Five Lakes walk is a hiking route, not a set of adjacent viewpoints, so confirm where you will finish and how you will return.
What this route gives up.
Sunnegga gives fast elevation and strong Matterhorn angles with more walking flexibility than a pure summit railway. The full lake circuit costs time and legs; a short viewpoint visit can be better for families or unstable weather.
Fit this field guide into Zermatt & the Matterhorn, not into an isolated checklist.
Zermatt’s car-free village concentrates rail, mountain transport and Matterhorn viewpoints into a small valley head. The challenge is not access to options but choosing one elevation system per day. Use village time as the buffer around mountain weather, not as a fourth attraction squeezed between summit tickets.
Three nights give a reasonable chance of one clear mountain day; four add useful resilience. Staying near Zermatt station simplifies luggage, while village-center hotels reduce evening walking.
Mainline travelers change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for Zermatt; private cars stop outside the village. Gornergrat, Sunnegga and glacier-bound lifts use different stations and ticket systems inside Zermatt.
Mountain rail and lifts operate on seasonal schedules with maintenance. Snow, wind and cloud affect high terrain even when the village is comfortable.
If the Matterhorn disappears, use village walks, museums, cafés or a lower excursion and move the costly summit day. A flexible night count matters more here than a rigid attraction sequence.
Arrive, orient, commit, then protect the return.
Check Zermatt lift status, official hiking information and mountain weather. Confirm the final lift/funicular connection before extending the walk.
- 01Arrive
Check the trail before elevation
Know whether the day is viewpoint-only or a real hike.
- 02Orient
Ride to Sunnegga
Use the quick ascent and reassess wind, cloud and energy on arrival.
- 03Commit
Commit to a measured walking loop
Turn around early if the Matterhorn vanishes or trail conditions worsen.
- 04Return
Descend on time
Reach the return lift with margin instead of ending with a road walk into the village.
A useful day even when the postcard disappears.
If trails are wet, snowy or visibility fades, keep the day around Sunnegga’s accessible viewpoints and descend early. Zermatt village remains the natural fallback.
Check Zermatt lift status, official hiking information and mountain weather. Confirm the final lift/funicular connection before extending the walk.
Change the plan before the problem compounds.
Hike marketing
Beautiful lake photos can hide cumulative distance and elevation. Read the actual route.
Heat and exposure
Sunny high terrain can still be hot and exposed; carry water and protection.
Lift closing
A late scenic pause can convert a simple route into an unwanted long descent.
