Ajaccio’s center, market and Napoleonic context form one city route; the red-cliff west coast is a separate long road or sea day with limited shortcuts.
Ajaccio city and gulf
Keep market, old streets, Fesch Museum or another collection and a gulf-side bus or walk together. This is the car-free option.
Sanguinaires sunset route
Use the current city bus, road or licensed boat to a defined endpoint, preserving the after-dark return.
Piana and Porto
Commit a full day or overnight to the western road or boat route. Narrow roads and stops make it unsuitable as a casual half-day.

Ajaccio airport, ferry port and rail station sit in different parts of the urban area. Confirm the first transfer and any rental-car pickup; west-coast roads require conservative travel time and fuel.

The city, Sanguinaires and Piana cannot all be meaningful in one day. The route keeps Ajaccio plus one near-gulf layer, or gives the entire day to the west coast.

Corsica’s airports, ferry ports, rail lines and mountain roads create several separate island systems. Ajaccio and the west coast, Bastia and Cap Corse, and Bonifacio–Porto-Vecchio in the south each deserve a base. Driving time, parking and weather outweigh straight-line distance.
Use at least five to seven nights for two island regions and more for a wider circuit. One base cannot serve every coast efficiently; change lodging only when the new base removes a repeated mountain-road transfer.
Flights and ferries arrive at different cities; the island railway covers selected corridors, not the entire coast. Rural buses can be limited, and rental-car pickup, fuel and parking need to be confirmed before arrival.
Summer adds heat, fire risk, congestion and full boats; shoulder seasons reduce services and some businesses. Mountain weather can differ sharply from the coast, and sea state affects ferries and boat excursions.
Keep a city, museum, market or short signed coastal route for days when boats, roads or fire controls disrupt the plan. Do not reroute onto unfamiliar mountain roads simply because one coast is closed.
