Ionian Islands: Corfu, Lefkada & Kefalonia
The Ionian islands do not share one transfer system. Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos use separate ports/airports; Lefkada connects to the mainland by road causeway/bridge rather than needing a routine car ferry. Choose one island base and confirm the exact pier, local bus and return.
Do not plan “the Ionian” as one island loop. Decide between a mainland-connected Lefkada stay, a Corfu/Paxos crossing or one of the southern island ferry/flight gateways.
Levante Ferries lists route families for Kyllini–Zakynthos, Kyllini–Poros on Kefalonia, and Patras–Sami–Pisaetos for Kefalonia/Ithaca. Check the current sailing, named port pair and any direct cross-island leg for your date; route calls can vary. Port, airport and town are separate last-mile transfers.
Use Corfu Town for its harbour and old-town walk, Lefkada Town for road entry and west-coast day planning, or a named Kefalonia/ Zakynthos base that matches the beach and port. Avoid sleeping at a remote cove if the final bus is unknown.
Summer brings stronger road traffic, heat and boat demand; winter services may be reduced. Sea state affects small-boat excursions. Check HNMS and current ferry/operator notices and keep one mainland or town alternative.
Lefkada’s road access can make a rental useful for beaches, while Corfu Town is better on foot/bus. Kefalonia and Zakynthos have dispersed coves where a car or pre-booked driver may be needed; confirm parking, road and one-way return.
Give each gateway a realistic day shape.
Choose one island chapter: Corfu Town for the historic harbour and a separate Paxos boat day, Lefkada Town for the road-linked west coast, or one southern Ionian base around its actual port and beach network. If you cross to Paxos, protect the return and keep it away from a fixed flight. On Lefkada, select one west-coast approach and account for steep paths and parking before adding a second beach. Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos are not interchangeable piers: a move between them may route through a mainland terminal and consume most of a day. Add another island only after a live operator search gives a direct route on your date and lodging leaves slack at both ends.
Without a car, Corfu Town is the easiest island base for walking, bus-linked movement and an operator-run boat day; confirm the exact departure pier rather than assuming every excursion leaves from the central harbour. Lefkada’s mainland road connection means a coach or transfer can reach the island without a ferry, but remote west-coast beaches still need a reliable final leg and return. For Kefalonia and Zakynthos, use the local KTEL map to choose one served town, then inspect the distance from its stop to the hotel, port or beach. If no same-day return is published, book a driver or stay overnight instead of treating the route as a walkable hop.
Choose the arrival and the backup as one plan.
Use these route shapes to choose where to stay; confirm the dated operating leg with its official carrier before booking the next connection.
Corfu: airport or Igoumenitsa ferry
Corfu Airport (CFU) and Corfu Town’s ferry port are different arrivals. The scheduled mainland crossing uses Igoumenitsa; follow the live carrier route to the actual quay, then plan the separate ride or bus into town.
Lefkada: road bridge, not a routine island ferry
The official tourism guide describes Lefkada as connected to the mainland by a floating bridge. Use a road/coach approach, often via the Preveza side, then solve the west-coast beach return separately; it is not a ferry hop from Corfu.
Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca: named ports
Levante publishes route families for Kyllini–Zakynthos, Kyllini–Poros on Kefalonia, and Patras–Sami–Pisaetos for Kefalonia/Ithaca. Check the current sailing, port pair and any direct cross-island leg; schedules and calls can vary by date.
If no direct southern-island sailing is listed
Compare returning through Kyllini, Poros, Sami or Patras, then connecting by road to the next named port. Count this as a full transfer day and add an overnight if the ground link and next ferry do not fit.
Start with the day you actually want.
Each guide names the arrival, core commitment and return problem. Compare the specific transport and access chain before adding another stop.
Corfu Town & Paxos Harbour Crossing
Corfu Town is a walkable heritage base; Paxos is a separate boat/port day whose operator and sea conditions determine the route. Do not treat an excursion boat as a permanent inter-island connection or book a tight onward flight from its return.

Lefkada connects to the mainland by a road bridge/causeway, so the gateway decision is road transfer rather than a routine island ferry. The west coast has exposed cliffs and beaches with different parking, stair and bus access; choose one shoreline and a safe return.

Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos are distinct island trips with different ferry ports and local transport. Choose one gateway, then build a local route from that island’s bus/car network; a short map distance does not guarantee a same-day direct ferry or a useful cross-island connection.

Reach the named gateway
Levante Ferries lists route families for Kyllini–Zakynthos, Kyllini–Poros on Kefalonia, and Patras–Sami–Pisaetos for Kefalonia/Ithaca. Check the current sailing, named port pair and any direct cross-island leg for your date; route calls can vary. Port, airport and town are separate last-mile transfers.
Choose a base that protects the evening
Use Corfu Town for its harbour and old-town walk, Lefkada Town for road entry and west-coast day planning, or a named Kefalonia/ Zakynthos base that matches the beach and port. Avoid sleeping at a remote cove if the final bus is unknown.
Make the car earn its place
Lefkada’s road access can make a rental useful for beaches, while Corfu Town is better on foot/bus. Kefalonia and Zakynthos have dispersed coves where a car or pre-booked driver may be needed; confirm parking, road and one-way return.
Questions to settle before departure
What should I confirm first?
Levante Ferries lists route families for Kyllini–Zakynthos, Kyllini–Poros on Kefalonia, and Patras–Sami–Pisaetos for Kefalonia/Ithaca. Check the current sailing, named port pair and any direct cross-island leg for your date; route calls can vary. Port, airport and town are separate last-mile transfers.
Where should I stay?
Use Corfu Town for its harbour and old-town walk, Lefkada Town for road entry and west-coast day planning, or a named Kefalonia/ Zakynthos base that matches the beach and port. Avoid sleeping at a remote cove if the final bus is unknown.
What is the lower-risk alternative?
Summer brings stronger road traffic, heat and boat demand; winter services may be reduced. Sea state affects small-boat excursions. Check HNMS and current ferry/operator notices and keep one mainland or town alternative.
What should I do if a ferry or island transfer is cancelled?
If weather stops a crossing, ask the named carrier what happens to the ticket and remain at the island base. A road-linked Lefkada day or Corfu Town visit may be a safer local alternative, but do not assume an alternate ferry or cross-island car transfer will rescue a missed international departure.
