Kefalonia, Ithaca & Zakynthos Gateways
Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos are distinct island trips with different ferry ports and local transport. Choose one gateway, then build a local route from that island’s bus/car network; a short map distance does not guarantee a same-day direct ferry or a useful cross-island connection.
Prevent an island-name itinerary from obscuring separate airport, ferry, village and return decisions.
Stay near the first door; solve the last mile.
On Kefalonia choose a base near Argostoli or the exact beach/port corridor; for Ithaca, match the harbour village to the arrival pier; on Zakynthos, compare Zakynthos Town with the beach area. Remote lodging needs a confirmed transfer.
Use Levante’s published route families as starting points: Kyllini–Zakynthos, Kyllini–Poros on Kefalonia, and Patras–Sami–Pisaetos for Kefalonia/Ithaca. Confirm the actual sailing, port pair and any direct cross-island leg for your date, then plan the port-to-lodging transfer on each island. Do not assume a direct Kefalonia–Zakynthos sailing.
Coves, cliff viewpoints and boat boarding often involve stairs, uneven ground or steep roads. Ask the local operator for the exact access and cancel if the sea is unsafe; verify beach entry independently.
Make the main commitment and the return fit together.
Select one island and its signature coast/town pair. If you move to another island, book the port leg as a full travel day with an overnight buffer, not an afterthought between beaches.
Allow three or more nights for one island. Add more if changing islands or needing the mainland ferry gateway; keep the transfer night near the actual departure point.
Verify the service and the place you will enter.
Check ferry schedules, vehicle space, operator disruption messages and local KTEL services for the specific date. Reserve boat trips through the named operator and preserve cancellation/return details.
Keep a complete alternative close to the same base.
High summer increases road and port traffic; wind changes boat tours and crossings. Off-season connections may thin out. Check HNMS and the current operator before locking an onward flight.
If a crossing or boat trip is cancelled, stay in the current island base and choose a confirmed road-accessible town/museum day. Never count a cancelled ferry as a delay you can simply outrun by driving.
One island lets you learn its real geography. A multi-island itinerary costs transfer days and works only with verified direct routes and enough buffer.
