Akihabara
& Kanda
Search by category instead of wandering every floor, then leave the screens behind for a shrine gate, old lanes or a shelf of secondhand books.

Akihabara and Kanda quick facts
Akihabara is better as four targeted hunts
The district changes store by store and floor by floor. Write a priority list before arrival, then leave room for one unexpected discovery.
New electronics and components
Compare exact model numbers, specifications and after-sales terms. Specialist component shops may sit away from the largest storefronts.
Figures, cards and character goods
Condition grades, sealed status and floor themes vary. Photograph labels only when store rules allow.
Current and retro
Region compatibility, save batteries, media condition and language can matter more than the displayed price.
Arcades and themed venues
Choose one experience that genuinely matches your interest. Read pricing and photography rules before entering.
Six checks before the register
A bargain is not useful when it fails at home. Verify the product and the current store conditions while both are in front of you.
Voltage and plug
Confirm input range, connector and whether an adapter changes only shape—not voltage.
Language and region
Check menus, media region, mobile bands, account restrictions and app availability.
Warranty and returns
Ask whether service applies outside Japan and keep the receipt and product identifiers.
Used means inspect
Read the grade, missing accessories and battery notes; test where store policy permits.
Current tax-free rules
Eligibility and handling procedures change. Follow the store and official instructions.
Compare the exact SKU
Color, bundle and domestic model can change value. A similar box is not the same product.
Shop intensely, then change texture
Use Kanda Myojin for the shortest cultural contrast or continue toward Jimbocho when books, cafés and older commercial streets matter more.
Electric Town → specialist lane → Kanda Myojin → optional books
Electric Town exit
Orient at street level and mark the first two stores before browsing.
One specialist lane
Compare the priority item while attention and bag space are fresh.
Kanda Myojin
Step away from retail, observe shrine etiquette and slow the pace.
Jimbocho
Continue for secondhand books and cafés only if another shopping district appeals.

The JR exit is a start, not the itinerary
JR Akihabara, Tokyo Metro Akihabara and Suehirocho serve different edges. Start on the Electric Town side for the classic core, then walk uphill toward Kanda Myojin rather than repeating the same retail block.
- Save the first store entrance, not just its brand.
- Keep purchases consolidated and bags closed.
- Check Sunday street rules on the official date.
- Respect shrine worship and photography guidance.
Stay for transport or a niche purpose
Akihabara can be a practical central base, but it is not automatically the best Tokyo night district for every traveler.
A strong base when…
- Collecting or gaming will fill more than one visit.
- JR and Hibiya Line access match the wider itinerary.
- You prefer a central location to west-side nightlife.
- Early Ueno, Tokyo Station or east-side starts are common.
Compare elsewhere when…
- You want quiet residential evenings or large green space.
- Most nights end in Shibuya, Shinjuku or Roppongi.
- The retail theme is only a one-hour curiosity.
- Your hotel search finds better value one or two stations away.
Akihabara and Kanda FAQ
How much time do I need in Akihabara?
Three to five hours works for a focused first visit. Serious collectors can spend most of a day comparing specialist stores.
Which exit should I use?
JR Electric Town is a common first start, but follow the operator and exit nearest your first confirmed destination.
Should I buy electronics here?
Only after confirming voltage, language, region, mobile bands, warranty, return policy and the exact model price.
Is Akihabara or Ikebukuro better for anime goods?
Neither is universally better. Akihabara mixes electronics, games and anime densely; Ikebukuro offers a different east-side store mix. Search the merchandise category first.
