Arosa & the Mountain Railway
Make the Chur–Arosa railway part of the excursion, then keep the resort day focused on the lake, village or one open mountain area rather than chasing multiple lift systems.

Rail-and-lake day
Enjoy the journey and resort basin without major elevation.
Mountain day
Add one operating lift area in good weather.
Short winter day
Stay within maintained/groomed routes and return before darkness.
Know where the day actually begins.
Arosa is reached by RhB from Chur on a winding mountain line. Once there, buses and lifts distribute visitors; the rail journey itself is substantial enough to count as part of the day.
What this route gives up.
Arosa offers a self-contained resort basin and scenic rail arrival. It is a poor add-on to another corridor because the train consumes meaningful time in both directions.
Fit this field guide into Chur, Davos & Graubünden, not into an isolated checklist.
Chur is a compact historic city and the practical gate to multiple Rhaetian Railway corridors. Davos, Arosa and the Rhine Gorge are not neighboring attractions in walking terms; each is a distinct rail or road day. Treat the canton as a set of transport corridors with different weather and seasonal functions.
Two nights in Chur can support one city and one excursion; more time belongs in the mountain base itself if hiking or winter sports are the purpose.
RhB trains are the organizing system. Arosa, Davos and the Rhine Gorge use different branches; through-ticket ease should not be mistaken for geographic closeness.
Resort lifts, hiking trails and winter operations vary strongly by season. Chur remains usable year-round and is the safest fallback when high terrain closes.
If mountain plans fail, use Chur’s old town, museums and a shorter rail excursion. Keep a second corridor ready instead of forcing a closed lift or exposed trail.
Arrive, orient, commit, then protect the return.
Check RhB, Arosa Lenzerheide lifts and current trails/snow conditions. Check the RhB Chur–Arosa timetable, Arosa Lenzerheide lift status, MeteoSwiss and current trail or snow conditions, then save a comfortable return train before committing to elevation.
- 01Arrive
Board in Chur with a return plan
Know the comfortable train home before ascent.
- 02Orient
Let the railway be part of the day
Use the journey as scenery, not dead time.
- 03Commit
Choose one Arosa layer
Lake/village or one mountain system is enough.
- 04Return
Descend before fatigue
Avoid turning the return railway into an exhausted late-night transfer.
A useful day even when the postcard disappears.
If lifts are clouded, retain the rail journey and village/lake circuit. If the weather is severely poor, use Chur instead of riding up only to sit indoors.
Check RhB, Arosa Lenzerheide lifts and current trails/snow conditions. Check the RhB Chur–Arosa timetable, Arosa Lenzerheide lift status, MeteoSwiss and current trail or snow conditions, then save a comfortable return train before committing to elevation.
Change the plan before the problem compounds.
Rail duration
Arosa looks close geographically but the mountain railway is not a quick hop.
Lift season
Not every cableway runs year-round.
Snow/ice surfaces
Use current local guidance for walking and winter routes.
