Lake Thun, Thun & Spiez

Thun and Spiez both sit on strong rail links from Interlaken. Boats add scenic movement but should not replace an efficient train when the town visit is the purpose.

Thun offers more urban depth and a larger old-town walk; Spiez offers a smaller bay-and-castle setting. Doing both is realistic, but one should remain the main stop.

Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and connects onward to the Jungfrau region. The town itself is convenient but not the strongest reason to spend a whole day. Use it as a base, then decide whether the day belongs to Brienz/Giessbach, Thun/Spiez or the high valleys.

Base strategy

Two to four nights work if Interlaken is the base for several excursions. Stay near Interlaken Ost for Jungfrau/Brienz access or West for Thun-side rail and a more central evening position.

Transfer system

Interlaken Ost and West serve different parts of the corridor. Trains and boats split toward Brienz and Thun; high-mountain journeys use additional operators and should be planned separately.

Season gate

Lake boats and mountain connections vary by season. Föhn, rain and cloud can make the lakes excellent while high summits are poor, so keep a low-elevation day ready.

Regional fallback

Use Thun, Spiez, Brienz or a lake boat when high mountains are hidden. A flexible base earns its cost only when you are willing to swap days by weather.

In poor weather, favor Thun’s old town, museums and rail access. Spiez still works for a short bay walk, but a long boat circuit becomes less valuable.
