San Francisco & the Bay

San Francisco combines steep streets, distinct neighborhoods and bay crossings. A waterfront day, Golden Gate landscapes and a neighborhood day are easier to enjoy than repeated drives through the city.

Build a trip that works

Three visits, three different days

01

Embarcadero & Alcatraz

Most of a day with Alcatraz; half a day for the waterfront alone.

Use the NPS link to find the authorized ticket provider. Pier numbers matter and are separated by substantial walking. Bay wind, hills and accessibility arrangements should be checked before assuming the island is a casual extension.

02

Golden Gate & the Presidio

Half a day to a full day.

Bridge pedestrian and bicycle access rules vary by side and time. Fog can arrive quickly; bring layers and stay on signed paths. Do not stop a vehicle on bridge approaches or assume every coastal trail is step-free.

03

Mission District & Neighborhood Walks

Half a day in one district.

Ask before photographing people and businesses. Keep belongings secure and avoid leaving bags in parked cars. Some murals and courtyards are on private property; a social-media location pin is not permission to enter.
