Canberra’s civic districts and the Snowy Mountains are separate operating trips, not one city excursion. Begin by choosing which side of Lake Burley Griffin anchors each day: Parliament House and the national institutions in Parkes; the National Museum and West Basin on Acton Peninsula; or the Australian War Memorial and the Mount Ainslie foothills in the north. They look close on a map, but the lake, broad roads, open ceremonial lawns and bus corridors make each a distinct half-day or full-day block. Put a timed tour, ticketed exhibition or Last Post Ceremony first, then arrange the nearby walk around that fixed point. A bridge or path closure can change which shoreline connection is practical, so do not plan a crossing from a photograph or a straight line alone. Use the city as a base for the institutions and choose a separate day for Namadgi only after checking park alerts, fire conditions, road access and a suitable vehicle or confirmed operator. The Snowy Mountains need a deliberate move to a New South Wales gateway such as Jindabyne, Thredbo or Perisher; the correct base depends on the season and exact trail, lift or resort. A regional coach to Jindabyne does not solve onward transport to every park entrance. Keep the high country as its own leg with a spare weather day, current chain and road rules, and a return plan that still works if a lift or seasonal shuttle is not running. In this guide, “Australian Alps” means a set of separate access systems, not one connected city day trip.

Sleep near the first decision.
Allow four Canberra nights for three full days across Parliament House and one Parkes institution, the National Museum and West Basin, and the War Memorial with its optional summit. Three nights usually gives two full days plus arrival/departure windows, so choose two districts and keep the third for a shorter stop only if actual timing permits. A central, Parkes or Acton base can reduce some transfers, but it does not make the lake edge, parliamentary precinct and northern memorial a single compact walking district. Compare the nearest useful stop and the day’s final return before choosing a hotel only for its map position. For an ACT nature day, allow the return drive and park access check; do not count on a city bus to reach every trailhead. For southern Kosciuszko, sleep in Jindabyne; choose Thredbo or Perisher only when that specific resort, lift or trail is the goal. Keep the alpine gateway for multiple nights because a coach arrival, local connection and changeable mountain weather can consume a day. A Canberra hotel is not a practical daily base for alpine roads.
Name the road, rail, ferry or operator.
Treat city routes and regional travel as separate systems. The Transport Canberra timetable in effect on 12 October 2026 lists Route 53 for the National Museum corridor and Routes 57/58 to Parliament House; its visitor routes guide lists R54 for the War Memorial. Verify the date, direction, stop name, weekend service and return departure in the live planner. The civic axis is broad and exposed, so an accessible vehicle transfer between selected institutions may be a better choice than a long walk in heat, wind or rain. NSW TrainLink’s Southern Region timetable valid from 26 July 2026 lists the advance-booked Route 775 coach from Canberra Civic to Jindabyne. Check the exact boarding point, booking availability, luggage terms and arrival time before building onward travel. From Jindabyne, confirm a separate vehicle, operator or seasonal service for the chosen park area; do not assume the Canberra coach reaches a resort trailhead. The published 2026 Snowy Mountains Bus Service ran 6 June–4 October, so that ski-season service had ended by this 12 October review. The northbound side of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge is closed to road and shared-path users from 8 January 2026, with reopening anticipated by the end of January 2027, weather permitting; follow the current National Capital Authority detour. A timetable snapshot is useful for planning, but recheck it for the actual travel date.

With two nights, arrival and departure are often partial days: protect one full day for Parliament House plus one Parkes institution, or choose a single other district if that is the trip’s priority. Add the National Museum or War Memorial only as a short arrival/departure block when the actual flight, coach and bus times leave enough margin. Route 53 serves the Museum corridor, R54 the Memorial stop, and Routes 57/58 Parliament House; verify both the outbound and return. If weather or mobility removes the optional outdoor walk, keep the indoor anchor. Leave Namadgi and Kosciuszko for a longer stay.

Four nights usually allow three full Canberra days: Parliament House and one Parkes institution; the National Museum and a short West Basin walk; and the War Memorial with an optional Mount Ainslie approach. Check each day’s direction and final return on Routes 53, R54, 57 or 58 as relevant. If the summit route, ceremony timing or exposed paths do not fit, retain the indoor visit and skip the optional walk. Keep Namadgi outside this city schedule unless the group deliberately replaces one institutional day and arranges the park transport.

Two mountain days plus one spare weather day fit only if local access is confirmed. Park entry, roads, chains, lifts and seasonal shuttles are separate from the regional coach. Verify the actual service dates, park alerts, road rules and exact trail or lift before fixing this high-country leg.
