Airlie, two different boat days
Sleep in Airlie before departure. Use one full day for a Whitehaven itinerary that names the landing you want; use another for the long Hardy Reef crossing. Keep the intervening or final day on land as a weather, rest and transfer buffer. Reach Port of Airlie or another terminal only when it is printed on that booking; PPP is inland at Proserpine and needs a road transfer.
Hamilton Island, one priority at sea
Choose this base if its airport or marina transfer fits the trip and a shorter published Hardy Reef crossing matters. Decide between one reef day and one Whitehaven day instead of squeezing both into arrival and departure margins. Confirm which marina the vessel uses, how your accommodation handles bags, and the last ferry or flight connection before adding an island stay.
Townsville and Magnetic Island
Treat this as a separate central-reef stop: arrive in Townsville, take the passenger ferry from Breakwater to Nelly Bay, then match the island bus to the selected walk or village. One island day can suit the Forts Walk and a single bay; keep an overnight in Townsville for weather or return-service disruption. Do not plan the roughly 275 km Townsville–Airlie road leg and an island day together.

Which base should I choose for Hardy Reef?
Compare the confirmed departure and crossing with where you sleep. Cruise Whitsundays lists departures from Port of Airlie, Daydream Island and Hamilton Island; its FAQ estimates about three hours each way from Airlie and two from Hamilton Island. Match the terminal and return to your booking and leave a buffer after arrival.
Can I make Townsville and Airlie one day trip?
No useful same-day plan should rely on that. The operator FAQ puts Townsville about 275 km and three hours by road from Airlie, and Magnetic Island adds a separate Townsville ferry, island bus and return. Treat Townsville as its own base.
Does rain automatically cancel a reef trip?
No. Cruise Whitsundays says tours operate rain-or-shine, but the skipper’s safety decision and sea conditions govern. Check the Mackay coastal forecast and operator notice, then keep a land day and the live change or refund terms as your fallback.
How far ahead should I check stingers and reef conduct?
Recheck the operator and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park guidance for your date. The operator notes stingers may be present year-round and are more common October–May; use any supplied suit, follow crew directions, and do not touch or stand on coral.
