Choose a passenger-ferry day

For one or two people without a car, the SeaLink passenger service from Breakwater to Nelly Bay is the simple crossing. It is about 20 minutes, but the island bus and ferry must still match. Check holiday and service-status changes before buying around a tight connection.

Choose the vehicle ferry only for a reason

A car can add flexibility for dispersed stays, but it is a separate operator, terminal and advance booking. For a day visit, compare that cost and vehicle-queue time with the Kinetic bus before committing.

Choose Forts Walk or a village/bay day

Forts Walk is a named 4 km Grade 3 route with about two hours walking time. Start in cooler hours and check track status. If heat, fire or fitness makes that poor fit, keep the day to a bus-served settlement and a short shaded outing; do not replace a closure with an unmarked track.

Treat swimming and weather as live decisions

Marine stingers may occur year-round and crocodiles are present on the regional coast. Check current authority advice, signs and patrol information at the actual beach. If weather, ferry status or heat breaks the plan, shorten the island visit or remain in Townsville; do not count on an extra sailing or unsafe natural-water substitute.

Make the decision before the distance.

Plan this as a Townsville gateway and an island day with one primary sector, not as an extension of Airlie Beach. SeaLink’s passenger ferry runs from Breakwater terminal in central Townsville to Nelly Bay in about 20 minutes; vehicle ferries use a separate operator and terminal. From Nelly Bay, the island bus links the main settlements and trail approaches, but a ferry ticket does not guarantee a bus connection. Choose the bus to Forts Junction for the 4 km Grade 3 Forts Walk (allow about two hours), or choose one village/bay focus; do not try to complete both plus multiple swims in one hot day.

Access first

Check the exact-date SeaLink timetable and service-status notice, public-holiday exceptions, terminal, ticket and boarding advice. Arrive at Townsville Breakwater with the operator’s stated margin. If bringing a car, book the separate vehicle ferry and its different terminal well in advance; do not drive to the passenger-ferry berth expecting a car sailing. At Nelly Bay, use the live Kinetic timetable and fare information to match the outbound and return bus to the Forts Walk, accommodation or selected village. Airport-to-terminal transfers are by taxi or a shuttle that the airport says must be prebooked; confirm the booking rather than assuming a walk-up seat.

Sequence

The day before, save the ferry status, exact sailing pair, Kinetic timetable, park alert and forecast. On the island, take an early passenger ferry, connect from Nelly Bay to Forts Junction, and walk the signed 4 km Grade 3 Forts route in cooler hours with water, footwear and sun protection. Keep the optional bay or swim only if the bus timetable, heat and current beach advice leave a safe return. Reboard the bus with margin for the ferry queue and return to the Townsville Breakwater terminal on the sailing you booked or verified; keep the next flight or long drive out of that same-day chain.

Match the island bus

Save the Kinetic times for Nelly Bay and the chosen stop. Allow walking and ferry queue time; do not assume a bus waits for a delayed sailing.

Do one primary route

Choose Forts Walk or a village/bay day. Check park alerts, heat, water, footwear and current swim advice before leaving the settlement.

04Return

Protect the return

Set a turnaround time that reaches Nelly Bay before the bus you need, then leave margin for the booked ferry. Keep onward flight or road travel separate.

Ferry and bus mismatch

Timetables change and public-holiday exceptions apply. A missed Nelly Bay connection can remove the last useful bus or ferry; verify each leg and its status.

Heat, fire and exposed walking

Forts is a Grade 3 walk with exposed sections. Start early, carry water and use park alerts; shorten or abandon the walk if conditions or health change.

Water and wildlife

Stingers may be present year-round and crocodiles occur on the regional coast. A beach photo or calm water is not a safety clearance; obey current signs and advice.

Country and care boundary

Access is never implied by proximity.

Yunbenun/Magnetic Island is Wulgurukaba Country. Respect cultural guidance and historic sites, stay on open tracks, keep distance from koalas and other wildlife, and obey fire, track and park closures. Crocodiles occur in the region and marine stingers can be present year-round, with higher risk in warmer months; a scenic beach is not permission to swim. Use current signs and advice, and swim only where authorities identify conditions as suitable.

Is the Magnetic Island ferry the same service as the Airlie ferry?

No. SeaLink runs passenger ferries from Townsville Breakwater to Nelly Bay; vehicle ferries are a separate service and terminal. Airlie and the Whitsunday islands are a different operating area.

Can I walk the Forts and still see several bays?

The Forts Walk alone is 4 km, Grade 3, and takes about two hours. Choose one main route, then add a bay only if the current bus timetable, heat and return sailing allow it.

Can I rely on the island bus?

Use the current Kinetic timetable and ferry status for the date you travel. Match a return bus to the terminal and leave margin; do not assume the ferry waits for a late bus.

Is a beach swim always safe?

No. Queensland Parks advises visitors to check current safety information; marine stingers may be present year-round and crocodiles occur around the region. Follow beach signs and authority advice and do not enter water when conditions are unclear.
