South Korea

Compact on a map, layered on the ground. Start with one metropolitan anchor, connect regions by the right rail or bus corridor, and leave enough time for the neighborhood life between landmarks.

Four landscapes, four different trip shapes

Seoul deserves a real stay. Busan and Gyeongju pair naturally in the southeast; Jeju is a flight-and-ground-transport decision rather than a casual extension.

Entry is passport-specific

Verify the official rule before paying for the trip

K-ETA exemptions and arrival procedures can change. Use the official K-ETA and immigration sites for your passport, purpose and arrival date; a blog summary is not an entry document.

Passport and permission

Check passport validity, visa-free eligibility, K-ETA status and any arrival form directly with the competent Korean authority.

Keep proof accessible

Store lodging, onward travel and insurance details offline. Airline checks and border decisions are separate from a travel site's explanation.

Do not apply through an ad

Use the official K-ETA domain. Third-party look-alike services can add fees without giving additional approval authority.

Four systems, four jobs

Use rail for corridors and buses for reach

There is no single best national pass. Match each leg to the operator, station location, reservation window and final urban connection.

Fast intercity

KTX and mainline rail

Strong for Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan structure. Confirm the actual station: some high-speed stops sit outside the historic center.

Regional reach

Express and intercity bus

Often reaches places rail does not. Confirm which terminal, because large cities can have several with different route families.

Local movement

Prepaid transit card

Tmoney and similar cards simplify subway and bus transfers, but products and refund rules differ. Check the current official guide.

Long jump

Domestic flight

Useful for Jeju and some open-jaw routes. Count airport access, security and baggage—not only scheduled flight time.

A ten-night first route

Move southeast once, then keep going

This framework protects useful city time while taking advantage of the strong north-to-southeast corridor. Reverse it when flights are better from Busan.

KOREA FIRST LINE

Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan

10 nights
Nights 1–5

Seoul by geography

Use four full days for palace, west, south and interest-led districts, with one weather-flexible block.

Nights 6–7

Gyeongju

Stay near the base that matches evening access, then separate the central heritage zone from Bulguksa.

Nights 8–10

Busan

Choose a hotel for the coast or central transport and avoid combining opposite ends of the city every day.

Departure

Fly open-jaw if useful

Leave from Busan when schedules and fares work, or return to Seoul with a protected international-flight buffer.

Weather changes the operating plan

Treat spring and autumn demand as a constraint

Heat, humidity, monsoon rain, typhoons, cold snaps and fine-dust episodes all affect the ideal day. Check forecasts and official alerts close to travel.

Spring

Bloom dates move

Use current reports, reserve high-demand stays early and keep one non-blossom reason for every stop.

Summer

Heat reshapes the day

Start outdoor routes early, protect indoor midday options and never force a coastal plan during severe weather.

Autumn and winter

Layers and daylight matter

Autumn weekends fill quickly; winter needs wind protection, footwear and a plan for shorter outdoor blocks.

Small habits reduce friction

Travel like the place is still lived in

Do…

  • Keep voices low on public transport.
  • Stand clear of doors and follow queue markings.
  • Carry a small waste bag when bins are scarce.
  • Ask before photographing people or private interiors.

Do not…

  • Enter residential lanes outside posted visitor hours.
  • Assume every restaurant handles every dietary restriction.
  • Eat or drink where a facility explicitly prohibits it.
  • Drive after alcohol; arrange a designated driver or taxi.
Quick answers

South Korea FAQ

How many cities fit into one week?

Seoul plus one additional base is the useful limit for most first trips. Three cities in seven nights often turns the trip into check-in, transfer and check-out repetition.

Should I buy a KORAIL pass?

Only after comparing it with the exact point-to-point tickets and current reservation rules. A pass is a pricing product, not a universal shortcut.

Can I rely only on foreign bank cards?

Cards are widely useful, but keep a modest cash backup and understand that some transit-card loading, small vendors or unattended machines may have different payment limits.

Is Jeju an easy two-day add-on?

Usually not. Flights are short, but airport access, a large island, variable weather and ground transport make a rushed two-day detour fragile.
