Green Mountains or Binna Burra

Select the trail family first. There is no public transport to the park; taxi or rideshare pickup is difficult, and the gateways are not a casual internal transfer.

Choose a track by grade

Use the shorter Green Mountains Centenary or Binna Burra Rainforest Circuit for modest walks; reserve grade-3/4 trails for a suitable group and full daylight.

Does the live alert change the objective?

As checked 12 October 2026, Queensland Parks lists severe-weather damage affecting parts of both sections. Recheck exact open segments and roads before setting out.

Field orientation

Choose the trailhead before the mountain road.

Lamington is not a single roadside stop. Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s) and Binna Burra are separate sections on different sides of the plateau; there is no public transport between them, and a same-day switch wastes daylight on winding roads. Let the walk you want choose your gateway: Green Mountains for Python Rock, Morans Falls or its short rainforest/accessible paths; Binna Burra for its rainforest circuit and eastern tracks. Keep the day to one access road and one walking objective.

Access first

From Broadbeach, Queensland Parks lists Green Mountains as a drive via Canungra: the final 36km is narrow and winding and takes at least 50 minutes; that section is unsuitable for RVs longer than 6m and vehicles towing caravans or camper trailers. Binna Burra is a separate drive via Beechmont; the final 1.8km is very narrow and winding. There is no public transport to the park, and taxi or rideshare pickup can be difficult. Choose a capable driver or a booked tour with a confirmed return, and do not rely on a last-minute app pickup.

Sequence

Use the Queensland Parks walking summary to fit the group: Green Mountains offers the grade-1 Centenary Track, 1.8km return/about 30 minutes, or the grade-3 Python Rock Track, 3.1km/about one hour; Morans Falls is grade 4, 4.4km/about 1.5 hours. Binna Burra’s Rainforest Circuit is grade 2, 1.2km/about 30 minutes. Times are walking estimates, not whole-trip durations. The 900m universal-access Centenary Track at Green Mountains is the wheelchair-oriented option; the first 700m of Border Track is described as accessible with assistance. Gateway and closure logic

The open section determines the route.

An alert can leave one track partly open while another remains closed. Preserve the same gateway and only use the officially open out-and-back segment; do not join closed circuits through an alternate path.

Compare Green Mountains and Binna Burra in the official walk list. Choose one; the roads, parking and trailheads are separate, and public transport does not reach the park.

02Move

Match track to ability and daylight

Use the published grade and return estimate, then add the mountain drive, stops and margin. Long walks should start early; the park advises not to attempt them after midday.

03Read

Read the exact alert segment

Check the severe-weather notice and maps. If a circuit is truncated, turn at the named open point and return on the same track; never bypass a closure.

04Return

Descend with a reserve

Carry water, map and first-aid basics, tell someone your route for longer walks and return with daylight. Do not depend on mobile coverage or an unconfirmed pickup.

Severe-weather closures are specific

On 12 October 2026, the alert limited Binna Burra’s Coomera route to the lookout and closed eastern Illinbah; Green Mountains’ Albert River route stopped at Echo Point. Recheck the live segment before hiking.

Remote rescue takes time

Do not cross flooded creeks or press on after the turnaround. The park warns rescue may take hours and advises against starting long walks after midday.

Country and care boundary

Access is never implied by proximity.

Lamington is protected World Heritage rainforest with fragile soils, waterways and restricted access areas. Stay on open tracks, do not cross flooded creeks, never jump or dive into waterways, and leave a long-walk plan with a responsible person. Rescue and medical help can take hours; the park advises against beginning long walks after midday.

Can I visit both gateways on one day?

It is not a good default. Green Mountains and Binna Burra have separate narrow access roads and distant trailheads; no public transport connects them, and taxi/rideshare pickup can be difficult. Choose the trail first.

Which walk suits a shorter day?

Green Mountains has the grade-1 Centenary Track at 1.8km return/about 30 minutes; Binna Burra has a grade-2 Rainforest Circuit at 1.2km/about 30 minutes. Confirm the live alert, surface and your group’s access needs.

What does the 12 October 2026 weather alert change?

At that check, Coomera at Binna Burra was open only to Coomera Falls Lookout from the first northern junction, while Illinbah was closed. At Green Mountains, Albert River was open only to Echo Point from the southern junction. Recheck the current alert and use the named out-and-back limits.

Is a rideshare a dependable return?

Queensland Parks warns pickup can be difficult. Confirm a commercial tour’s pickup and return before booking, or arrange your own vehicle; do not make a remote trail day depend on an unconfirmed app request.
