Start at the Queensland Cultural Centre and decide whether you want QAG’s permanent collections, GOMA’s contemporary exhibitions, or enough time for both. The buildings are only 150m apart, but that short link does not make exhibitions, queues or timed programs interchangeable. From there, use the South Bank river edge as a pause; continue into West End only if the group still has time and energy for a separate meal or market visit. The route is strongest when one collection or exhibition gets unhurried time, followed by a clear neighborhood choice. Adding every building and market can turn a cultural visit into a transfer race.

Pick the building
Use QAGOMA’s current exhibition and access pages to choose QAG, GOMA or both; the two entrances are on Stanley Place and 150m apart.
Give the gallery time
Check daily opening, holiday exceptions and paid/timed programs. Save the ticket or exhibition you care about as the day’s fixed point.
Pause, then decide on West End
Use the public river edge for a break. Continue to Boundary Street only if the walk or current bus, heat and meal timing still suit.
Close at a checked stop
Select the South Brisbane, busway or West End return that matches the final location and confirm the service before the meal, not afterward.

A free gallery is not every free exhibit
General QAGOMA entry is free, but some exhibitions and events charge or require tickets. Check the current listing for the exact attraction.
Market not operating on your date
Market calendars change and an old weekly listing can be wrong. Verify the organiser’s calendar; if unconfirmed, plan Boundary Street for food without a market dependency.
Exposed connecting walk
Rain, heat or fatigue can make the river-to-neighborhood link poor value. Use a current bus or end the route at the galleries instead of forcing an extra walk.
Access is never implied by proximity.
QAGOMA interprets works and cultures with specific provenance and voices; read the institution’s labels and photography rules rather than reducing collections to décor. West End is a lived-in commercial neighborhood. Keep shop thresholds and footpaths clear, ask before photographing people, and treat a market as a working event rather than a guaranteed attraction.

Can I visit both QAG and GOMA?
They are 150m apart and share Stanley Place entrances, so both can fit if the selected exhibitions and your time allow. Choose one as the priority; each building has its own displays and some programs are ticketed.
Is entry free?
QAGOMA says general admission is free, including most exhibitions, screenings and programs; some exhibitions and special events have an entry fee or ticket. Confirm the exact program before travel.
Should I plan the route around a market?
Only if the market organiser confirms it is operating at the right location on your date. Keep Boundary Street food as a standalone option so a changed market calendar does not strand the day.
What is the simplest rainy-day version?
Visit one confirmed QAGOMA building, shorten or skip the river walk, and use a current Translink bus for West End only if that transfer helps. Return from the stop serving the actual final venue.
